“Do you use religion in therapy?”

FAQ Answer:

“Generally, no. I am glad to incorporate it as you wish, if it is useful for you. Otherwise, I have no intention of sneaking in any religious talk. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about my personal beliefs, especially if it can help you feel safer in this space.”

I believe that it’s important to work with a therapist who helps you feel comfortable in your beliefs. I understand the fear that can come along with starting therapy, trusting a new healthcare provider, and allowing yourself to be vulnerable. I am open about my personal background and beliefs because I want prospective clients to feel confident in taking the leap into their therapy journey.

My Religious Background

I grew up in a non-religious home. My mother came from a Catholic background and my father came from a Hindu background. As a child, I was introduced to both religions, but neither were a priority in day-to-day life. In high school and college, I identified as a Christian and explored my religious beliefs more seriously. As I've grown into adulthood and have had more life experiences, I've moved away from Christianity. I would say I began questioning and having internal conflict with religion around 2015.

My Current Beliefs

At this point in my life, I do not identify with any organized religion nor do I participate in religious practices. I believe more strongly in loving and supporting people, regardless of their religious identity. It is a much higher priority in my life to honor people as individuals and listen to my intuition regarding "right and wrong." My current belief is to honor my relationship with myself and my intuition rather than looking outside of myself for answers. I’m also very aware that my perspective may shift as I continue to live my life, and I am open to that possibility.

Working Together as Client and Therapist

You are allowed to be in this space with whatever beliefs you have. I believe that we each have our own journey when it comes to religion and spirituality, and I respect yours. In therapy, we can explore your beliefs and your history with religion if it is an important part of your story. You have my full permission to express anger and hurt related to religion in our sessions. I will give you the space you need to process what may need to be processed.
